After the success of the first season, The Predicta League returning for a second was never a question. For the founding members - Lucas, Martin, Bob and Vinny - The Predicta League had become a flag to wave; no four men could be prouder of their own children than they were of their league. So it came as no shock that The Core Four signed up without hesitation moments after the first season finished. However little did they know what was in store for them: there were new members eager to craft themselves a legacy, a champion who was believing his own hype, a bronze medalist looking to live up to his own expectations, a dream would be broken and a man who had always been last would make himself a champion.
The core four had bonded over the first season, much in the same way soldiers do. They had a shared experience that no one else could relate to. So as the new season approached the subject of new members was brought up. While finding people to join wouldn't be difficult, the existing members were worried about ruining the league with people who didn't get what it was about. During the last year not a day went by where the league wasn't spoken of. Whether any of the members were around or not the core 4 discussed it at great length. While some turned their noses up at the mere mention of this now famous league others appeared intrigued. This became a sort of subconscious filtering system and friendships were formed or broken depending on whether or not they had Predicta fever. As August approached it was decided that two such people fitted the Predicta bill. The first was a man named Steven Thacker who had to suffer the most thorough Predicta chat, yet never complained and actually became heavily involved even though he wasn't actually predicting. The League had found its 5th member. Another person (word used in the loosest definition possible) who fit the bill was a cheeky chappy named Psycho "Richard" Whitmore, who became positively horny at the mere mention of the word Predicta. This sexual predator would become it's 6th member. Whilst not being two traditional football fans they nonetheless had the necessary commitment and belief in the League required and so were trusted with all the responsibility that comes with being a Predictor. After a hasty recruitment process the League shut it's doors and season two was under way.
Another development this season was the introduction of the Predicta bank, In the previous year the weekly bet was simply paid as and when the loser had money, but with the League expanding faster than Psycho's cock at a Hanson concert a plan was hatched to formalise the procedure. As the Predictors had enough on their plate it was decided that an outsider would be needed. A lengthy search was conducted and in the end the League settled on Shona Elliott who impressed with her enthusiasm and ability to own Excel. Shona was appointed Predicta Secretary and the League had it's first employee.
The season began at a fast and furious pace. The first week saw a Predicta tie with Vinny (who the previous year had gone 22 weeks without a win and collected the wooden spoon) and new boy Psycho (who was seen as a bit of joke figure and was bookies favourite to be bottom of the table) sharing the spoils. While Vinny used this early momentum to mount an assault towards the top of the table, shrugging of early calls for him to repeat last seasons hilarity, Psycho's true form showed and he soon began to sink like a stone.
Fellow newcomer Steven quickly settled in and soon displayed the characteristics that would make him a Predictor to watch - he would either win the week or come last. The Predicta League had found it's most unpredictable Predictor. Reigning champion Lucas also found it tough going in those early weeks and whilst he occasionally threatened to kick on as he did in the previous year, these proved to be false dawns and he found himself in the unfamiliar bottom half of the table.
One person who was heavily favoured going into the new season was Martin Capewell, who finished the previous season on the back of an unprecedented 5 week winning streak (a record that still stands today). Capes settled into a steady rhythm of finishing in the top 3 but found a win elusive. It wasn't until week 10 that he reigned supreme. Bob started the season quietly confident about his chances. Silver medalist the season before, he was making all the right noises that he would be able to go one step further this year and win the title. He started the season like a bat out of hell and went into the Christmas period in second place. Bob was a cool customer and was looking to leave the opposition frozen with fear and prove that he was snow joke.
In what seemed like no time at all Christmas was upon us and the league appeared to have been turned upside down. Vinny was amassing a healthy lead, while Champion Lucas was struggling and soon found himself second bottom, only just ahead of league laughing stock Psycho. Bob and Martin were settled into the familiar territory of 2nd and 3rd respectively while newcomer Steven continued to bemuse everyone in 4th. The league was setting itself up for a climax comparable to the best of porn films.
Perhaps the biggest thing to happen in Season 2 was the change of the Predicta process. While the previous year the Predictors would post there predictions on the popular social networking site Facebook, with the League growing exponentially it was decided that this was no longer prudent for a number of reasons - 1. it wasn't very efficient and 2. There was a fear of Predictors copying predictions. It was then left to local computer whizz, reigning champion and all round nice guy Lucas to come up with a solution. He deemed that expanding the already existing www.thepredictaleague.com was the solution. He set to work day and night and before the others could believe it, a fully functioning prediction capable website was developed. The website now made cheating impossible and featured an up to date display of the scores, something that was previously unheard of. It also featured a new weekly column written by a mysterious vagabond known only as POW. Each week he would write a small piece on the Prediction of the Week, in a effort to give the deserving Predictors their moment in the sun. The columns were a bit close to the knuckle to say the least but soon became must read material for all Predictors, mainly to see what that crazy, scotch loving bastard would say next! While these columns were informative they were also at times a minefield of rape jokes and poor grammar, so it was not long before Predicta Secretary Shona was asked to step in and cast an eye over the columns as editor.
As the season raced towards it's conclusion Vinny was sat atop the table and wouldn't be caught making him the second ever Predicta league champion, former champion Lucas finally started to find some form and miraculously found himself third going into the final day of the season just ahead of newcomer Steven in 4th. They both had quickly overtaken Bob - who capitulated after his earlier good run and was sinking like a stone and with 6 weeks to go went bottom and would stay there till the end. Second place appeared to be locked in with Martin 10 points ahead of 3rd. Psycho's sigh of relief could be heard on Mars as he somehow managed to avoid the wooden spoon and took 5th. Steven was nipping at Lucas' heels and so it was all eyes on this battle heading into the final set of predictions. And so on the 18th of August 2009, the Predictors readied themselves for one last chance at glory. Little did they know what plague would be born on this day, for the 18th shall always be known as the birth day of the Dream Breaker. The much anticipated battle for 3rd place never materialised - instead Lucas shocked the world and stole 2nd place from people's champion Martin, who had dreamed of improving on his bronze medal from the season before. While Lucas was slightly embarrassed to usurp Martin, it ignited a hunger inside him, and he became addicted to breaking the dreams of his fellow Predictors. It's an addiction which lasts to this day and the League is a poorer place for it.
Season 2 had ended and the impossible had happened - The Predicta League had actually gotten bigger! The expansion of the website had made the league self-reliant and the new members hadn't diluted the league's powers at all. Further expansion seemed inevitable and while new members would now be welcomed with open arms, one thing was for certain, they would have a hell of an act to follow! |
